Misdiagnosis is shockingly common in the United States. Phil shared some startling statistics:
- 12 million Americans are affected by diagnostic errors each year
- 40,000 to 80,000 people die from misdiagnosis annually
- Women and minorities face a 20-30% higher rate of misdiagnosis
Additionally, cancer is the most commonly misdiagnosed disease. Cervical, prostate, and colon cancers top the list.
Spotlighting Overlooked Conditions
While widespread diseases get most of the attention, Don-Ellen and Phil want to spotlight less common conditions. They plan to interview patients and medical experts on topics like:
- Turner Syndrome - A chromosomal disorder that only affects females
- Angelman Syndrome - A rare genetic disorder often misdiagnosed initially
- Low-functioning autism - The severe end of the spectrum that is less understood
Sharing stories from different perspectives will spread awareness and provide resources to those affected.
The Difficult Journey to Accurate Diagnosis
Don-Ellen shared her story of living with lipedema, an uncommon fat tissue disorder. Despite awful symptoms, it took 15 years before she got an accurate diagnosis. She finally learned the truth by chance while seeing a doctor for another reason.
Sadly, this lengthy diagnostic journey is common for rare diseases. Don-Ellen hopes the podcast will help shorten the timeline and difficulty for others.
